Brown Advisory Announces the Appointment of Two Board Members

Baltimore, MD (December 1, 2008) -- Brown Advisory, a leading independent investment firm with offices in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and London announced the appointments of Edward J. Mathias and John O. Downing as members of the firm’s Board of Directors.
Mathias is a Managing Director of The Carlyle Group, a global private equity firm headquartered in Washington, D.C. that he was instrumental in founding and for which he assisted in raising its initial capital. Prior to joining Carlyle in January 1994, Mathias was a member of the Management Committee and Board of Directors of T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., a major investment management organization. Among his many activities, Mathias is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and The Trustees’ Council of the National Gallery of Art where he co-chairs The President's Circle. He also serves as a member of the Investment Committee for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a trustee and member of The Investment Board for the University of Pennsylvania, and on The Dean's Board of Advisors at The Harvard Business School. Mr. Mathias holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Downing is a Founding Principal and Chief Investment Officer of CDK Investment Management, a New York-based firm specializing in alternative investments. Before launching CDK, Mr. Downing served as a General Partner and Managing Director of Goldman, Sachs & Co. His career there spanned 19 years in the Equities and Investment Banking divisions. He also serves on the investment boards of Vanderbilt University, The Hotchkiss School, and Morristown Memorial Hospital. Mr. Downing holds an M.B.A from the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business and an undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University.
